Minimum Wage in 2023 Increased by More Than 10%

As of 1 January 2023, the statutory minimum wage in the Netherlands increased by more than 10%. At the time, this was one of the largest increases in recent years and was introduced to help improve employees’ purchasing power in response to rising living costs.

For employees aged 21 and older working full-time, the statutory gross minimum wage from 1 January 2023 was:

  • Minimum monthly wage: €1,934.40
  • Minimum weekly wage: €446.40
  • Minimum daily wage: €89.28

Why was the minimum wage increased?

The Dutch government introduced this significant increase to better support employees facing higher living expenses caused by inflation and rising energy prices. By raising the statutory minimum wage, the government aimed to strengthen the financial position of workers across the country. For employers, this change also meant adjusting payroll costs and employment conditions to comply with the updated legislation.
